24th International WDR Europaforum 2022
Europe in the new geopolitical reality
February 24, 2022 shattered the dream of the “European house”, caused a humanitarian catastrophe and put even more considerable strain on the international order. Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine indeed marks a turning point. It forces the European Union to fundamentally reflect on its geopolitical positions and perspectives.
Since 1997, the Europaforum of Westdeutscher Rundfunk has been an outstanding setting for taking stock of European policy. Heads of national governments and ministers meet leading representatives of EU institutions, political parties, think tanks and civil society organisations. The aim is an expert appraisal of the state and prospects of the European project in the light of current developments.
More than ever, in the current dramatic situation, public service broadcasting has the task of accompanying the process of European integration constructively and, where necessary, critically. The violent attack on a sovereign state and its pro-European orientation shows that the achievements of the EU community of nations must be consolidated internally and defended externally. The WDR Europaforum, broadcast on television, radio and the internet, sees itself as a communicative hub for this realisation.
For a quarter of a century, the WDR Europaforum has established itself – not only from a German perspective – as a renowned address for European policy analysis and production of ideas. Participants have included heads of state and government from Germany, Austria, Poland and Slovenia, the presidents of the European Council, the European Commission and the European Parliament, ministers, commissioners and members of parliament as well as prominent academics and authors.
Cooperation partners of the WDR Europaforum are the European Commission and the European Parliament. Media partners include ARD/Das Erste, WDR, Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR), Südwestrundfunk (SWR), Deutsche Welle, the event and documentary channel phoenix and Österreichischer Rundfunk (ORF). Several TV stations and internet platforms will broadcast the conference live.
As in the previous year, the 24th edition of the Forum will be organised as a hybrid conference in Berlin, Brussels and Cologne, with several participants present on site while others will be connected online.
The WDR Europaforum 2022 will be held on the 2nd of June 2022.
